Beach huts

The problem of illegal beach huts on the coast or on the dunes is a recurring concern for the communes along the Landes coastline.

These huts are built from driftwood washed up on the shoreline, and deliberately left standing as part of the Syndicat Mixte’s framework for environmental purposes, notably to maintain biodiversity and fight erosion.

These structures present a number of problems in terms of safety, health, and environmental impact. They are sometimes inhabited, and can also be the site of illicit activities.

A prefectoral decree has been drawn up to enable Communes wishing to do so to proceed with their dismantling within the framework of the Mayor’s police powers, with the possible support of the Gendarmerie.
